How bad is the translation?

I've heard that the translation was fine for like the first third of the VN but that the lack of editing became painfully obvious as the story progresses.
Basically, does SubaHibi deserve a much better TL?Last modified on 2018-06-29 at 00:09

It's much better than some. While some may argue it's not as good as the best TLs, it's still no slouch.

A couple parts read a bit awkwardly, but it's definitely an above average translation. The amount of effort that went into properly translating all of the references alone is more that roughly half of the official releases I see nowadays.

Now, if you want games that deserve a better translation, start with Ever17 -The Out of Infinity- or legitimately anything Amaterasu Translations had any involvement in whatsoever.

I didn't see anything really bad in the translation.

Excluding the fact that Tomosane uses '俺 ore' and Takuji uses '僕 boku' kinda got lost in the English version, but well, I don't have any idea of how you can translate "I" to English while retaining the Japanese concept/tone and not sounding silly.

Some culture/anime/pop references got lost but... I guess that's a localization problem and not a TL problem

List of Subahibi parodies: link

I guess they were translated just fine, but since I didn't knew most of the source material of them; they just felt like "Oh ok, there is this Japanese joke here"

And again, I have no idea of how adapting these. Maybe a little encyclopedia in the game were to be a good idea. But that would be extremely time consuming and probably not worth the job. Eh, let's be honest, except for book, philosophy and quotes references, these jokes and references weren't all that important.

And the most important ones are all well translated. (Books, philosophy and quotes) Heck, besides the jokes ones, a lot the references are from a western source.

To be honest, I thought that Subahibi has a very good TL considering how unique this VN is in general.

tl;dr: It's a pretty good TL. People who say otherwise are being too picky, honestly.Last modified on 2018-06-30 at 07:58

#5 I remember Utsuro no Hako to Zero no Maria used the same trick and the translator just put (ore) and (boku) next to every use of "I" by the specific character. It still felt awkward, and I can't see any reason to do it unless it significantly affects the story (which it really doesn't in this case).
