Each time someone has to ask about how to edit something, it always ends up derailing the Candidates for deletion thread or another one. Here is a general thread for that purpose. Feel free to ask how to edit but also ask for disambiguation of rules or anything edit related.

I will baptize it by asking how to transfer Alice 2010's screenshots from Rance II - Hangyaku no Shoujo-tachi - to Rance 02 Kai - Hangyaku no Shoujo-tachi -? I read somewhere that transfer was possible but I don't see how you do that like it requires to upload from your computer.

How do you want to transfer it if Rance 02 has no separate release? It was only on Alice 2010 compilation
+ screenshots are tied to release, not to the page

The trick is to give the form the references to the existing screenshots like if they were already there from the beginning, instead of performing a fresh new upload that will result in duplicated and slightly deteriorated pics.
I tried to put
[{"id":6186,"nsfw":0,"rid":5860},{"id":6187,"nsfw":1,"rid":5860},{"id":6188,"nsfw":0,"rid":5860},{"id":6189,"nsfw":0,"rid":5860}]
as value of the input "screenshots" but it didn't work. I tried that + a new edit in case the form was rejected because of no changes but it was... not really convincing. I am not familiar with requirements of vndb's forms, and like it's a pain in the ass, without further info, I will just transfer them with the old way: download and upload, which means they will be duplicated while slightly differing by quality.
I don't remember who found the way to perform such thing.

+ screenshots are tied to release, not to the page
Screenshots are tied to VN (and need releases to appear). If not, screenshots of Alice 2010 would appear on every linked VN. If you unlink a release from a VN page, the screenshots disappear but they reappear if you relink the release to the VN. Why do you think that you upload screens by editing the VN and not the release?Last modified on 2016-09-09 at 04:44

I used to have a bookmarklet to add screenshot IDs to the form, but that's not going to work anymore after the JS rewrite of some time ago.

Your approach to put that data into the "screenshots" input might work, but you need to trick the form to actually display the images before submitting. What might work is to modify the form as you did before and then refresh the page. Hopefully the browser remembers the input and the JS will load it.

last time i did it by intercepting HTTP request with browser extension and manual replacing of screenshot IDs in form data, but i imagine yorhel might be against releasing step-by-step guide to this trick since by manual crafting of HTTP requests one could unintentionally hurt database integrity.

i myself have a deep understanding of HTTP protocol and inner site operation so i could do it without fear of breaking things apart, and it rarely needed anyway, i've done it maybe twice.

Oh feel free to release such a guide, the backend code is supposed to be hardened against manually crafted requests. If you are aware of any potential issues I'd love to hear them. :)

Usually, a JAN should be enough to trigger the addition of a new release but, in this case, I don't know if we allow something like the 3rd printing of Maitetsu? link

I'm sorry, but I don't think I understand what you mean.
If you're talking about which form of Romanization to use, there's a great piece of information in the site's FAQ right here: d5#1Last modified on 2017-02-13 at 18:47

I think what weilai's asking is about romanizing character names when they don't have a proper name, just a title or description. In that case, it's generally translated, e.g. 主人公 = Protagonist, 主人公の父 = Protagonist's Father, etc.

If you are asking if these are the correct romanizations of the respective kanji, then yes.
主人公=shujinkou, but 母 and 父 can have more than one correct romanization.
EDIT: Seems Minah got the meaning of Weilai's question. She probably has a lot of experience translating Googlish to English :-)Last modified on 2017-02-13 at 19:24

Could anyone please show me where I can find information on how to use meta traits? I feel stupid for being unable to figure it out given that nobody seems ever to have needed to ask before, but I can't get around the "meta traits can't be used here" error and I can't find any place where I CAN use them. Is access restricted or something?

Meta tags and traits can't be added to tag/trait lists. They're just there as a higher level category to organize other tags & traits. You should look up the meta trait you're trying to add and find a more specific trait underneath it to add instead.

Aaaah, I got it! It didn't want me to type in the meta tag at all, even though it displayed. Thank you!

Stumbled across Cats-Box which has shutdown and spawned Clear (link). As part of that, all the previous games have been made available free (looks like there might be a few VNs missing from here so if anyone feels like adding them before me, go ahead!). Now my question, because I've seen both here: should there be notes in the releases to indicate they are now free, or a separate Free Edition release added? I would assume if there are no changes a note is best.

So... after reading through a small VN over several days and selecting traits when they applied, am I right to assume that this appoach won't technically do because the edit won't be accepted, with following the instructions to go back a page and try again will have the new edits missing? (I do know other applications which also have this "feature") That'd shuck and I'd like to know for certain before losing another character, that this was either just an unlucky hiccup on my like 3rd edit or at least the time frame within one has to submit an edit (even if it is actually quite benevolent).

there's a game (v14814) where you can download the full client for free, but only allows you to read the trial unless you buy it (with an in app purchase), is it counted as freeware or not?

the faq says "Check if this box if the game is downloadable (or otherwise distributed) at no cost." but someone said it's not so i want to confirm

@18 Are you just leaving the tab open for days and it's timing out when you want to submit? I really don't think there's a way around that. You should just mark down all the traits you want to add in notepad or something as you are playing and add them all at once later.

@19 No it doesn't count as freeware. There's plenty of mobile releases already like that in the database and it's handled like that, marked as non-free but with a note.Last modified on 2017-03-27 at 04:01

@707: Look at how all the other Winter Wolves games are formatted. All of them are the same, i.e. if you download a trial, you can upgrade it to full version in-app. Most if not all WW game entries have the trial and the full version as the separate release entries.

Not sure how you romanize って particle you can see in Nyotaika Panic! ~Onna no Ko no Karadatte Kimochi Ii~. Certainly not glued to the word like that but with a space or a dash? Like the "tte" is phonetically linked to what is before it, I assume it should be "Karada-tte" but I think I saw a fair number of times "tte" alone so I don't really know what to choose.

Just search for って. I'd say attached is fine. Seems to be generally done like that so far as well.

tte alone is definitely weird, as it's spoken together with the word before. If you do a -, you'd need to remove a t, because the - would already do the same I feel.
So: Karadatte or Karada-te. But in the end it's just romanization. The only real important thing is that it mostly sounds like intended and is consistent.Last modified on 2017-06-18 at 15:11

I searched for it and so far it is the space which wins and if I asked it's because it didn't feel right.
Escalation'95 Onee-sama tte Yonde Ii Desu ka?
Hentai Mask Seigi no Mikata wa T-back. tte Aho na!
Bero Rero Rerore ~Ame ni Natta Osananajimi no Shiru tte Konna ni Umai no ka!!~
Himekishi Angelica ~Anata tte, Hontou ni Saitei no Kuzu Da wa!~
Imouto no Chuunibyou to NEET o Naosu no wa, Ore no xx Dake tte Maji?
Imouto no Penniban de "Higii" Tte Sarechau Otoko no Ko
etc.

It shouldn't be attached because it's not a conjugation, it's two different elements (って being a particle) which are not combined to create a new one. A particle is at best separated but is the liaison relevant when it comes to its romanization?
The dash is not extending the gemination. You mixed the dash with the japanese chouon ー (transcribed by doubling the vowel). I don't remember any example of a dash extending a gemination in romanization. What I remember is the dash being used to highlight the link with the previous word like for honorifics, for name of shops (-ya/屋), family (-ke/家) or "-ification" (-ka/化).
In fact, I was already for the dash before asking but I wanted to know if there was some official rule for this case like we are talking about a transcription system (they must have specified how to handle this, right?) or if the contributors who didn't copy what they found had some justification, like I might fix every occurrence of って.
The only problem I see is the って can quote a whole sentence, not just a word, like in my second example.Last modified on 2017-06-18 at 22:29

On anidb it seems to be romanized attached, but those seem to be mostly with verbs. Not sure if it would work differently in ^ those situations with nouns and as an exclamation.
