I wasn't going to read the translation anyway, so I don't really care, but potential customers should be aware of this:
From the patch page:
Some imagery and script content has been edited to comply with international laws and regulations.
From tumblr (NSWF) link
*Due to legal concerns, one scene featuring an act of bestiality has been removed from this release of the game. The cut content is a very short section of a longer scene, and we feel that its removal does not take away from the impact of the scene in question or compromise the creative integrity of the work.
UPDATE 7/27: Our understanding of the removal of the scene in question was slightly incorrect. The CG depicting the scene has been removed, but no text from the game has been cut.
So, the 18+ is slightly censored (apparently it's just 1 CG, but still). Because the West isn't ready for some doggy-style H. :P

" we feel that its removal does not take away from the impact of the scene in question or compromise the creative integrity of the work"

How about letting the end user feel whatever the original author intented to, or whatever the fuck they want to feel instead?

^ You are being silly. Unless the end user decides about all the laws in regards to publishing the game worldwide. Last time I checked, that wasn't the case though.

It's really not worth getting your panties in a bunch over 1 unimportant CG that normally only gets 30 seconds of screen time.

To be honest, that's how censoring starts. Yes, this isn't a big deal. If the scene isn't altered otherwise, you can even just get the CG online if you care so much. But if censoring starts, it just gets more and more. There are enough precedents with J-Rpgs, so I'd never speak against people who are heavily against this kind of stuff, no matter how small the censored part is.

If you quickly show a clear stance, it'll help. IF International stopped censoring and rather decided that they'd not publish anything they think isn't working out. That may give a game or two less overall, but they'll also try to think about how to publish things completely intact more.
There is also Dungeon Travelers 2 which had some CG altered, but its publisher was very honest about it and was actually not just cutting them out, but redrawing them. Because they literally got the game back by ESRB and got told that the unaltered version would get an "AO" rating. So in that case, there was no other way, which means you can support it much easier.

However, that doesn't change all those publishers that are just "b-but MAYBE someone complains!" and self-censor the living crap out of games. Even Nintendo does that. To a big part, because people weren't angry enough. It's just small stuff right? A swim-suit here, a boobs reference that got turned into hair there. It doesn't matter right? And so it continues and won't stop anymore, rather get more and more.

Ultimately this thread would go there anyway, so with that we have the "facts" and don't need to discuss this all over again, as this discussion has been done to death. And aside of these facts it's really just a matter of opinion. And trust for the publisher here.

It's a scene of a dog raping a girl, jesus. Bestiality is actually illegal in some places as compared to swimsuits, which are... not anywhere??
Using a slippery slope argument here makes no sense.

More important than censorship issues : how is the translation? Does it butcher the original or is it actually good?

@7: So are lolis. And revealing swimsuits on females (and probably males as well) are sure to be illegal in some places in the world as well. Choukou Sennin Haruka is a good example for official released... "not so nice" content. All kinds of.

Almost everything isn't legal SOMEWHERE. Censoring is done for different reasons though. For example if it's illegal in the US and Jast wants to sell it there, having their HQ there, their physical warehouse and servers.. they probably actually need to censor it to keep their staff safe. I'm actually not sure if that really is the case, or if this just was a "precaution", though many probably don't care because of the uncensored patch they offered for Starless . Hard to call it true censoring like that.Last modified on 2017-08-31 at 20:59

can someone tell me how much the steam version differs from the original? I mean which scenes were changed from the first arc/episode, were there rewrites or things removed?

#23, I believe the only thing removed was one CG about 2/3 into the game that appears for only a handful of lines. The rest uses the TLWiki translation which you can trust is a relatively faithful translation.

The actual steam version of chapter 1 should be different though. If you don't use the patch. But who'd not use the patch, given that the game isn't even close to complete otherwise.
